Using Mercury in Gold Ore Crushing

The extraction of gold by mercury is described by Biringuccio in his treatise (which was published in Italian in 1540), and had apparently been a secret art for some time previously. Among other ancient methods of amalgamating ores, the tina and cazo systems may be mentioned.
