The densities of rocks and minerals are normally expressed as specific gravity, which is the density of the rock relative to the density of water. This isnt as complex as you may think because waters density is 1 gram per cubic centimeter or 1 g/cm3. Therefore, these numbers translate directly to g/cm3, or tonnes per cubic meter (t/m3).
Rock Density
The following Table provides a list of typical rock types and minerals, with their density range and mean values. From this Table, it can be seen that the entire range of densities covers a factor of about eight— from 1.0 g/cm 3 for water to 8.1 g/cm 3 for cinnabar.

where ρ B is the density of the bulk rock and ρ G is the density of the grains (i.e., the mineral, if the composition is monomineralogic and homogeneous). For example, if a sandstone has a ρ B of 2.38 grams per cubic centimetre (g/cm 3 ) and is composed of quartz (SiO 2 ) grains having ρ G of 2.65 g/cm 3 , the total porosity is

It was found that the average density per rock was linear in average gray scale for each rock, as shown in Figure 3. The fitted lines are as follows, with AGS = average gray scale and AD = average density: (5) The values of R 2 were 0.91 and 0.97 for the 0.5 rocks and the 0.75 rocks, respectively.

Apr 24, 2017 · Divide the mass of the rock by its volume to calculate the density of the rock. In our example, the density is 20.4/8 = 2.55 g/cubic cm. Divide the rock density by the density of water to calculate the specific gravity.
Porosity and Bulk Density of Sedimentary Rocks USGS
Average values for the porosity of sedimentary rocks have been given by Barrell (1914) as: shale, 8.2 percent; sandstone, 14.8 per cent; limestone, 5.3 percent; and all sedimentary rocks, 8.5 percent. Additional data since the publication of Barrells summary indicate that the average value of 8.2 percent for the porosity of shale may be low.

Density ScienceDirect
For sedimentary rocks, there is generally a broad range of density values that reflect variations of porosity and saturation. The highest values represent dense (low porosity) members of the type, whereas the lower values result from porosity increase and/or increase of gas content in the pores.
Density of Various Solids
* Note that even if pounds per cubic foot is often used as a measure of density in the U.S., pounds are really a measure of force, not mass. Slugs are the correct measure of mass. You can divide pounds per cubic foot by 32.2 for a rough value in slugs.

Density and Magnetic Susceptibility Values for Rocks in
Density Density values for rocks in our study area are generally consistent with common trends (Johnson and Olhoeft, 1984) and show highest average grain densities for both extrusive and intrusive mafic igneous rocks at 2.88 and 2.93 g/cm3 respectively, and lowest mean grain density values for felsic intrusive rocks at 2.67 g/ cm3 (table 1). Because grain density is affected largely by a

Density of Construction Materials in kg/m3 and lb/ft3
Density Values of Different Construction Materials. For example water has a density of 1000kg/m 3 , if we place bamboo wood (350kg/m 3) on water it will float on water surface similarly if we drop a brick (1700 kg.m 3) it will sink into the water. Density value of construction material will also help to find out the quantity of material needed for particular space.
